Phoenix Rising

This painting was started waaaay back in 2003 while attending university. The assigned project was to combine two of my favourite artists’ styles into one cohesive piece. (Can you guess who the artists are?) With a full schedule of university and a part-time job (and being a single mom), I struggled to meet the deadline. I got the gist of it down, but even back then, I knew it needed more work. All these years, I’ve kept the piece because it holds special meaning to me. It represents the freedom I gained from leaving an abusive relationship.

The phoenix is a bird that rises from the ashes; representing rebirth. I painted myself as the phoenix, transformed; a new life awaiting me.
